A fantastic victory and probably Villa's best performance of the season due in no small part to the tactical changes employed by manager Jeff Haywood. Choosing to adopt a 4-5-1 formation that saw Jim Gardner playing in a holding midfield role and goal machine Paul Skinner running the front line single handedly. That left the experience of Tony and Simon in the centre of the park with Mark and Paul Hallam providing pace down the wings.
The last time these 2 teams met, Villa were a goal down after a matter of seconds without even touching the ball and by half time were trailing 4-0. In that game, Villa put in a huge second half performance that saw them come back and end the game level at 4-4.
For the first 20 minutes, this game was played at a lightning pace with good football from both sides but neither of them creating any clearcut chances. Villa looked strong down the flanks with Doug and Mark especially creating havoc with some great runs and crosses. Whilst the back 2 of Ponytail and Blood looked inpenetrable especially with Jim on hand to support. Finally, a breakthrough midway through the first half saw Skinner tap in from close distance after the Tanners keeper had fumbled.
The game changing moment came 10 minutes later when, from a Tanners corner, Doug made a glorious knock down header to their centre forward whose resultant shot seemed to be heading to the top corner but somehow Jeff, yes Jeff, managed to claw the ball out. From this scramble, Villa were able to break with Mark down thr right who ran a full 70 yards with the ball before pulling it back for Simon to finish and make it 2-0. Jim added a third just before half time with a sweet strike from the edge of the area that gave the keeper no chance.
Despite being 3-0 up at half time, there was still a sense that should Tanners get an early goal it would still be all to play for. Villa needn't have worried. With Mark continuing to terrorise them down the right hand side and Jim breaking up every opposition play, Villa soon added a fourth with the prolific Skinner. Simon added a fifth, with around an hour on the clock, after Jim had played a great ball to put him through one on one and by this time the game was won.
It wasn't all to go Villa's way though. Whilst looking for a 2nd consecutive clean sheet, a scramble in the Villa box saw the opposition striker spin and shoot to give Tanners a consolation goal. This only seemed to spur on the Villa side, however, especially the young contingent in Clarke, Gardner, Wheeldon and Skinner all 4 of whom were playing in a side together for the first time this season. In a finally flurry, in the last 10 minutes, first Mark, then Tom, after a great run from left back that he started and finished, and then Skinner to complete his hat-trick to take his tally to 8 in 2 games, all added further goals to make the final score 8-1.
