Match Report

A disappointing end to a record-breaking season and the first time this season that Villa have failed to score in a game. Arguably, Villa were much the better side for large proportions of the game. Certainly for the first 30 minutes, Villa had a good command of the middle of the park with Jim Gardner and occasional player Dean Hodges competing well whilst Simon, playing in his throwback position on the left was working well with Tom causing all sorts of problems for the notorious Silver Fox. Despite Bingham employing the services of a number of "new" players, Villa were holding their own well and perhaps should have gone in at the break in the lead with Tony, Skinner and Jim all coming close. Meanwhile, at the other end, the inpenetrable Dr Blood put in his usual epic performance.

With Byron on for Simon down the left and Mark on the right, Villa should have perhaps put the ageing forwards under a little more pressure but none the less every player continued to work tirelessly. Ultimately, this was going to be a game decided by mistakes and in the end Villa made 2 crucial mis-judgements in their own penalty area midway through the second half. With Bingham on the attack a simple cross looked like a bread and butter clearance only for it to ricochet off two or three players and then fall to an unmarked Bingham player who cooly slotted it away. Only 5 minutes later, Villa broke down another Bingham attack and, again, should have cleared with ease but poor communication resulted in a corner for the opposition from which they scored from with a direct strike into the far post.

The rest of the game pretty much carried on the same way it had started. Hard, fast and competitive but very few clear cut chances. Tony took a nasty blow to the face but fought on bravely whilst Doug and Deano gloated smugly on the side that it was 0-0 when they went off!

A good competitive game that gives Bingham bragging rights this season. Whether we will see these 2 teams battle it out again on the pirch remains to be seen.
