Match Report

Villa made it 10 wins out of 10 in 2015 with a hard fought battle against their arch nemesis Bingham. In what is always one of the most anticipated fixtures on the calendar, a capacity attendance turned out to see Villa maintain their 100% record for the year and close the season in style.

The game was a hard fought battle between 2 teams who wanted to play football. Sadly the pitch, resembling a dandelion field, made free flowing football a little prohibitive and resulted in more of a dog fight in the middle of the park.

Villa started well and pretty much dominated the first half taking an early lead when the resurgent Tommo rifled in a half volley from wide on the left having spotted the keeper out of position. From then on, Villa continued to push with Mark and Paul Skinner linking well together down the right hand side and creating a few half chances. Deano and Simon worked hard to support from central midfield with Simon have one chance cleared on the line and then Deano showing a great bit of skill and turn of pace before putting his shot narrowly wide.

At the back Tony and Steve were keeping the Bingham attack very quiet. However, following a couple of half clearances after a Bingham corner, the ball was looped back into a crowded Villa area and a neat finish saw Bingham draw level. Shortly after Bingham might have taken the lead had it not been for a good save by Jeffo diving to his left. This proved only to be a blip though and Villa pushed on once again with Tommo, Deano and Simon all going close again before half time.

With the score at 1-1 at the break, the game was there to be won and both sides took to the field at the start of the second half with renewed vigour. Bingham had their best spell of the game for the first quarter of an hour creating good opportunities down both flanks but they weren't able to make the pressure pay with Villa's full back team closing down every opening.

As legs started to tire and challenges became delayed, it was always going to be a battle of fitness for the last half hour. With a record crowd turning out to watch this clash of the titans including former playing legends Rugaldinho, Multimillionaire Terry Linley, Dr Blood and Robocop Thomas, the atmosphere was electric and led by the all new svelt Deano, Villa doubled their efforts. In fact with 10 minutes to go it was former manager Rug's inspirational contribution that secured the match for Villa. With the ball having gone out of play for a corner, Rug raced to retrieve the ball to allow the set piece to be taken. The corner was cleared and then moments later a great run by Mark down the right hand side saw him beat the full back and put in a looping cross to the far post where Tommo was waiting patiently to calmly nod in his and Villa's second and decisive goal.

Villa saw out the final few minutes with little incident to secure an unprecedented 10th straight victory and surely a new contract for the once under fire manager Jeff Haywood.....

....but in all seriousness, thanks to Jeff once again for organising things this season and to his backroom staff Colin, Wol, JPT for sorting out finances, kit, management duties when Jeff not around etc. See you all next season!
